UKNNL | Supporting the UK’s Nuclear Goals and Strengthening National and Energy Security
Overview
The United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL) is the UK’s lead civil national laboratory for nuclear fission. We work closely with Government and industry to support the UK’s nuclear goals and strengthen national and energy security.
Our mission is to enable nuclear outcomes for Government and help the wider UK nuclear sector grow. We do this by protecting key national capabilities, providing trusted technical advice, and delivering research that supports safe nuclear operations and long-term progress.
What we do
- Protect national capability: We look after infrastructure and specialist facilities that are critical to the UK.
- Advise Government: We provide technical and strategic advice on nuclear fuels and nuclear materials.
- Support safe operations: We carry out research that helps keep nuclear plants operating safely in the UK and overseas.
- Enable decommissioning: We deliver practical research that supports clean-up and decommissioning programmes.
- Help new technology reach the market: We provide expertise and facilities to help the private sector develop and deploy solutions faster.
- Grow skills: We champion advanced nuclear skills and support development across the workforce.
Our purpose is simple: Nuclear science to benefit society.
