Description
Plymouth City Council is looking for a Principal Registered Building Inspector to join its Local Authority Building Control team.
This is a permanent, full-time role based at Ballard House in Plymouth. You will work 37 hours per week.
You will play a lead role in building control work across the city. The role covers a wide range of projects. These include domestic schemes, commercial work, large residential developments, complex multi-storey buildings and high-rise mixed-use schemes.
You will help make sure buildings are safe, sustainable and compliant. Sensible work, then. A rare plot twist in the paperwork kingdom.
You will also support the growth of the service. Plymouth City Council wants to build its skills, capacity and readiness for future building control changes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead inspections: Carry out inspections across domestic and commercial projects.
- Support compliance: Make sure work meets Building Regulations.
- Manage applications: Review applications and make clear regulatory decisions.
- Respond to risk: Provide expert support on dangerous structures.
- Advise on site: Give practical building control advice during project work.
- Work with partners: Collaborate with internal teams and external partners.
- Improve practice: Help shape building control policies and best practice.
- Mentor others: Support and develop junior team members.
- Maintain standards: Keep your competency and registration up to date.
About You
Plymouth City Council is looking for someone with:
- BSR registration: Registered with the Building Safety Regulator at Class 2E as a minimum.
- Building control experience: Strong knowledge of building control work.
- Regulatory judgement: The ability to make sound and timely decisions.
- Inspection skills: Experience leading inspections across varied projects.
- Technical confidence: The ability to work on complex and high-profile schemes.
- Leadership skills: Experience guiding, supporting or mentoring others.
- Partnership working: Confidence working with teams, partners and stakeholders.
- Professional standards: A clear focus on safety, quality and compliance.
- Right to work: Existing right to work in the UK, as visa sponsorship is not available.
