Description

Manchester City Council is hiring two Principal Building Inspector roles within its Building Control Service.

These are full-time, permanent roles. You will work 35 hours per week. The role is based at the Town Hall Extension, Albert Square, Manchester, with blended, hybrid and home working available.

This is a senior building control role. You will help make sure buildings across Manchester are safe, compliant, inclusive and sustainable. The work covers a wide range of schemes. These include arenas, sports stadia, high-rise buildings, housing schemes, retail centres, hospitals, an international airport and more.

So, not exactly “check one small extension and go home”. Humanity has once again built upwards, sideways and into complexity. Someone now has to inspect it properly.

You will play a key role in helping the council meet its statutory duties. You will also support public safety, building quality and the city’s long-term growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead building control work: Support high-quality building control across Manchester.
  • Inspect complex projects: Work across major, high-risk and varied building types.
  • Support compliance: Help make sure buildings meet building safety law and regulations.
  • Use Class 3 expertise: Carry out restricted activities linked to your registration.
  • Manage risk: Respond to complex issues, often under pressure.
  • Advise stakeholders: Work with internal teams, external agencies and key partners.
  • Support service improvement: Help deliver strong, modern building control services.
  • Analyse information: Review data, plans and evidence to make sound decisions.
  • Lead people: Support, manage and motivate staff where needed.
  • Plan workloads: Manage several priorities, tasks and projects at the same time.

About You

Manchester City Council is looking for someone with:

  • BSR registration: Registered as a Class 3 G-H Building Inspector with the Building Safety Regulator.
  • Professional membership: Membership of a building control body such as MCABE, MCIOB, MRICS, CEng, MIStructE or equivalent.
  • Building control experience: Experience in a local authority or Registered Building Control Approver setting.
  • Technical knowledge: Strong building control knowledge linked to complex work.
  • Driving licence: A full UK driving licence and access to your own car for work.
  • Communication skills: The ability to build strong links with teams, partners and stakeholders.
  • Analytical skills: The ability to assess information, spot patterns and make clear judgements.
  • Planning skills: The ability to manage a busy and varied workload.
  • Problem-solving skills: Confidence dealing with complex and urgent issues.
  • Creative thinking: The ability to find practical solutions within policy and procedure.
  • Financial awareness: An understanding of value for money and council resources.
  • People management skills: The ability to lead, support and improve team performance.

Applicants must already have the right to work in the UK. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.

Application Tips

For this Building Inspector role, focus on your Class 3 G-H registration, building control experience and work on complex projects. Give clear examples from local authority or Registered Building Control Approver work. Show how you manage risk, make decisions, support compliance and work with partners. Keep your examples truthful and based on your own experience. AI can help you write clearly, but apparently it cannot live your professional life for you.
