Description

About the Role

Manchester City Council is hiring a Senior Building Inspector to join its Building Control Service.

This is a full-time, permanent role. You will work 35 hours per week. The role is based at the Town Hall Extension, Albert Square, Manchester. Home working is also supported in a practical way.

You will help make sure buildings across Manchester are safe, legal, sustainable and accessible. The work covers a wide range of projects. These include high-rise buildings, housing schemes, sports venues, shopping centres, hospitals, an airport and more.

So, not a quiet little job checking garden walls and calling it a day. Manchester has built itself into a full-time compliance puzzle, and someone has to keep the pieces from falling on people.

This role supports the council’s legal duties under building safety law. It also helps the city deliver high-quality building control services across a large and varied building stock.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect buildings: Carry out building control work across a wide range of projects.
  • Support compliance: Help make sure work meets building safety law and standards.
  • Use BSR registration: Carry out work linked to Class 2A-F Building Inspector registration.
  • Manage risk: Respond to complex issues with clear and practical solutions.
  • Support safe design: Help ensure buildings are safe, sustainable and accessible.
  • Work with others: Liaise with internal teams, partners, developers and stakeholders.
  • Analyse information: Review plans, data and evidence to support decisions.
  • Solve problems: Deal with urgent and complex matters under pressure.
  • Use ICT well: Support better links between building control work and digital systems.
  • Support value for money: Consider cost, quality and service impact in decisions.
  • Influence others: Help promote high standards across the service.

About You

Manchester City Council is looking for someone with:

  • BSR registration: Registration with the Building Safety Regulator as a Class 2A-F Building Inspector.
  • Relevant qualification: A suitable degree or equivalent award in a construction-related subject.
  • Professional membership: Membership of RICS, CABE, CIOB or a similar professional body.
  • Building control knowledge: Strong knowledge gained in a local authority or Registered Building Control Approver setting.
  • Driving licence: A full UK driving licence and access to your own car for work.
  • Communication skills: The ability to speak clearly with a wide range of people and groups.
  • Analytical skills: The ability to assess information, test ideas and form plans.
  • Decision-making skills: Confidence dealing with complex problems and risk.
  • ICT skills: The ability to support better use of digital tools and systems.
  • Financial awareness: An understanding of council budgets and value for money.
  • Commercial skills: The ability to spot practical and cost-effective service options.
  • People skills: The ability to influence others and support high standards.

Applicants must already have the right to work in the UK. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.

Application Tips

For this Senior Building Inspector role, focus on your Class 2A-F BSR registration, building control knowledge and experience with complex projects. Give clear examples from local authority or Registered Building Control Approver work. Show how you manage risk, make sound decisions and support safe, compliant buildings. Keep your examples truthful and based on your own work. AI can polish a sentence, but it cannot magically give you ten years of site experience.
