Description

Mace Construct is looking for a Fire Safety Manager to support the Curzon Street station project in Birmingham.

Curzon Street station is an £800m HS2 project in Birmingham city centre. The station will form part of the new HS2 network between London and the North. It is also expected to support wider development across the east side of Birmingham.

You will lead, coordinate and check fire safety arrangements across the project. You will help make sure fire risks are found, controlled, monitored and clearly shared.

This is both a strategic and practical site-based role. You will work with senior leaders, the Health, Safety and Wellbeing team, Assurance and Compliance teams, site teams and an external Fire Consultant.

So yes, this is not just “make sure the fire extinguishers exist and hope for the best”. It is a large, complex construction site. Hope is not a fire strategy, despite humanity’s ongoing attempts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Fire Safety: Manage fire safety arrangements across the project.
  • Support legal duties: Help the project meet duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
  • Advise the Responsible Person: Support the Project Director on fire safety compliance.
  • Improve systems: Lead the fire safety management system and support continuous improvement.
  • Give advice: Provide competent fire safety advice to project teams, leaders and contractors.
  • Monitor site standards: Audit and review fire safety arrangements using Yellow Jacket.
  • Carry out inspections: Complete fire safety checks in line with the audit and inspection schedule.
  • Investigate incidents: Support fire-related incident investigation, reporting and close-out.
  • Work with authorities: Liaise with enforcing authorities, fire engineers, insurers and third-party auditors.
  • Maintain records: Prepare, review and update fire safety documents and records.
  • Promote culture: Support a positive fire safety culture through training and guidance.
  • Support the Fire Consultant: Coordinate visits and escort the consultant around site.
  • Review plans: Review Fire Risk Assessments and Fire Safety Plans each month.
  • Close actions: Make sure Fire Risk Assessment actions are completed on time.
  • Monitor temporary controls: Check temporary fire protection, housekeeping and hot works controls.
  • Manage hot works: Ensure the hot works permit system is working well.
  • Plan emergencies: Coordinate emergency plans, fire drills and evacuation procedures.
  • Lead during evacuations: Act as the person in charge at the Fire Control Point.
  • Review fire strategy: Make sure the fire strategy matches construction phasing and design intent.
  • Brief site teams: Make sure fire safety controls are shared with operatives and supervisors.
  • Manage fire wardens: Ensure enough fire wardens are in place for welfare areas and briefed.

About You

Mace Construct is looking for someone with:

  • Construction experience: At least 3 years’ construction experience.
  • Fire Safety qualification: Minimum Level 3 Fire Safety qualification, or equivalent.
  • Fire risk assessor qualification: Minimum Level 4 Construction Fire Risk Assessor, or equivalent.
  • CSCS card: Gold Supervisors, Black Managers or Academically Qualified Person card.
  • Construction fire safety experience: Experience managing fire safety in construction.
  • Professional membership: Membership of a recognised body, such as MIFSM or AIFireE as a minimum.
  • Construction method awareness: Understanding of how construction methods affect fire risk.
  • Large site experience: Experience on large, complex or multi-contractor sites.
  • Legal knowledge: Strong knowledge of UK fire safety law and guidance.
  • Construction phase knowledge: Understanding of fire safety duties during construction.
  • Fire risk knowledge: Understanding of fire risk assessment and temporary fire risk management.
  • Inspection skills: Ability to carry out site inspections, audits and compliance reviews.
  • Incident investigation: Competence in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Drawing review skills: Ability to read drawings, layouts and fire strategies.
  • Communication skills: Ability to explain fire safety controls clearly to site teams.
