United Utilities: Supplying Clean, Safe Water to Homes and usinesses
Overview
United Utilities provides water and wastewater services across the North West of England. We supply clean, safe water to homes and businesses. We also collect and treat wastewater, then return it safely to the environment.
What United Utilities do
We support around seven million people, serving about three million households and around 200,000 business premises.
How water gets to the tap
First, we protect the land around our reservoirs. This helps keep raw water clean before it is treated.
Next, we treat the water to strict quality standards.
Then, we deliver it through our network to customer taps. We supply around 1,500 million litres of water each day.
How United Utilities handle wastewater
We collect wastewater from homes and businesses. We also take surface water from roads and highways.
After that, we treat it at our wastewater treatment works. Finally, we release it back into rivers and the sea in a safe way.
The scale of our network
To deliver these vital services, we operate major assets across the region:
- Reservoirs: 184
- Water pipes: Over 42,000 km (from Cumbria to Cheshire)
- Sewers: Over 72,000 km
- Aqueducts: Over 1,400 km
