Description
Hertfordshire Building Control is looking for a Principal Registered Building Inspector to join its technical team.
This is a permanent role. It is remote/hybrid, with the office based in Welwyn Garden City.
You will manage a range of projects. These will include small domestic extensions and complex major commercial developments.
You will work with clients, design teams, architects and builders. You will act as the compliance lead and give professional advice during each stage of the build process.
This role suits an experienced Building Inspector with strong plan checking skills, site knowledge and a clear understanding of Building Regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Project support: Manage a range of building control projects.
- Technical advice: Work with clients and design teams to give early advice.
- Plan checks: Assess plans submitted for Building Regulation approval.
- Site assessments: Carry out on-site technical assessments.
- Builder guidance: Give clear guidance to builders during works.
- Investigations: Carry out forensic investigations when needed.
- Technical support: Support undergraduate Registered Building Inspectors with complex matters.
- Deadlines: Assess plans within statutory timescales and company standards.
- Project lead: Act as the main contact and lead for plan assessments.
- Handover: Prepare compliant designs for handover to the site inspector.
- Records: Keep files, data and documents up to date.
- Compliance: Identify issues and take action with duty holders.
- Team input: Attend meetings and share technical knowledge.
- Leadership: Deputise for the Head of Building Control when required.
About You
You should have:
- Registration: Registered Building Inspector status, minimum Class 2D.
- Plan checking: Experience in building control plan checking.
- Legislation knowledge: Strong knowledge of Approved Documents, Building Regulations 2010 and the Building Act 1984.
- Professional membership: Full membership of RICS, CIOB or CABE, or working towards it.
- IT skills: Experience using MS Office, Outlook, spreadsheets, databases, document systems and dataspace.
- Communication: Strong communication skills and an approachable style.
- Organisation: The ability to manage several projects and deadlines at once.
Desirable experience includes:
- Commercial plan checking: Competence in commercial plan checking.
- RICS Plan of Work: Knowledge of design and construction stages.
- British Standards: Knowledge of BS9991 and BS9999.
