Description

Southern Housing is looking for a Fire Safety Surveyor to join its dedicated Fire Safety team.

You will lead fire risk assessment activity across Southern Housing’s portfolio. You will help make sure fire safety works are completed on time and to the right standard.

The role covers inspections across East Sussex, West Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. You will be on site at least four days per week. The remaining day can be worked from home or from an office location.

The role also includes occasional travel. This includes overnight stays on the Isle of Wight every 2 to 3 months and monthly visits to the Farringdon office for team meetings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee fire risk works: Make sure fire risk assessment actions are completed within agreed timescales.
  • Support compliance: Help ensure Southern Housing homes meet statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Inspect buildings: Carry out inspections across the South East and Isle of Wight.
  • Assess defects: Review fire safety defects and building deficiencies.
  • Recommend solutions: Provide remedial proposals and prepare work specifications.
  • Check completed works: Carry out post-inspection and quality control checks.
  • Pursue redress: Take action where works are not completed to the right standard.
  • Monitor contractors: Carry out health and safety spot checks.
  • Check RAMS: Make sure contractors follow relevant risk assessments and method statements.
  • Support residents: Provide a high standard of service to residents, leaseholders and property owners.
  • Work with partners: Liaise with managing agents and internal teams.
  • Maintain safety standards: Help keep Southern Housing properties safe and well managed.

About You

Southern Housing is looking for someone with:

  • Surveying experience: Experience as a fire or building surveyor in a maintenance setting.
  • Inspection skills: Experience carrying out pre-inspections and post-inspections.
  • Fire qualification: NEBOSH Fire or an equivalent qualification.
  • Legal knowledge: Working knowledge of the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005.
  • Contractor experience: Experience working with contractors using SOR and non-SOR contracts.
  • Specification skills: Ability to produce detailed specifications of work.
  • Technical knowledge: Knowledge of current codes of practice, Building Regulations, health and safety law, standards and materials.
  • Defect knowledge: Strong understanding of construction, design and fire-related defects.
  • Contract knowledge: Knowledge of contract management.
  • Driving: A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
  • Professional membership: RICS, CIOB, IFE or similar membership is desirable, but not essential.
