Description
Stevenage Borough Council is looking for a Clerk of Works to join its Construction and Property team.
This is a full-time, permanent role. You will work 37 hours per week in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.
You will be the lead officer for quality assurance. You will carry out pre-inspections, post-inspections and work-in-progress inspections.
You will give feedback to the Project Manager and help make sure works are completed to the right standard.
You will also manage a portfolio of minor works and support the resolution of complaints from residents, councillors, MPs, the Housing Ombudsman and other stakeholders.
In short, you will help make sure building works are safe, well managed and not left to the ancient human strategy of “we’ll sort it later”. A strategy with a truly cursed success rate.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead quality assurance: Carry out inspections before, during and after works.
- Inspect works: Check building, construction and refurbishment works on site.
- Report findings: Give clear feedback to the Project Manager.
- Manage minor works: Oversee a portfolio of smaller works.
- Provide updates: Prepare regular updates and reports for the Project Manager.
- Resolve complaints: Act as the first point of contact for complaints linked to works.
- Support residents: Help resolve issues raised by residents and their representatives.
- Handle stakeholder concerns: Respond to matters raised by councillors, MPs, the public and the Housing Ombudsman.
- Deputise when needed: Cover for the line manager when they are unavailable.
- Attend meetings: Take part in team meetings, briefings and relevant training.
- Monitor safety: Raise health and safety concerns with the right people.
- Check quality: Make sure work is completed to a good standard.
- Support delivery: Work across teams as business needs change.
About You
Stevenage Borough Council is looking for someone with:
- Construction knowledge: Good knowledge of building construction.
- CDM knowledge: Understanding of CDM Regulations.
- Regulation knowledge: Knowledge of building and planning regulations.
- Relevant experience: Experience in a similar role within construction or refurbishment.
- Health and safety knowledge: Working knowledge of health and safety law.
- Quality focus: Strong attention to detail and pride in good work.
- Conflict management: Ability to manage conflict in a calm and professional way.
- SOR experience: Experience using Schedules of Rates.
- Quotes and tenders: Experience working with quotes and tenders.
- IT skills: Confidence using IT systems.
- Flexible approach: Ability to work across teams as needs change.
- Communication skills: Ability to give clear updates and handle complaints.
- Organisational skills: Ability to manage inspections, records and priorities.
