Description
Hertfordshire Building Control is hiring a Principal Registered Building Inspector.
This is a permanent role in the Technical team. It is a remote and hybrid role, with the office based in Welwyn Garden City.
You will manage a wide range of projects. These will include small domestic extensions and large commercial developments. You will work with clients, architects, builders, and design teams through each stage of the build.
This role is ideal for an experienced Building Inspector who can lead on compliance, give clear advice, and add value for customers throughout the project.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead projects: Manage projects from early design through to completion
- Give early advice: Work with clients and design teams to provide pre-emptive guidance
- Check plans: Assess plans for Building Regulation approval within deadlines
- Carry out assessments: Complete on-site technical assessments and support compliance
- Support delivery: Prepare compliant designs for handover to site inspectors
- Act as project lead: Be the main contact for plans assessment work
- Maintain records: Keep files, data, and documents updated
- Support site teams: Help site inspectors with questions during the build
- Manage interventions: Identify compliance issues and follow up with duty holders
- Undertake investigations: Carry out forensic investigations where needed
- Support colleagues: Help undergraduate Registered Building Inspectors and technical teams with complex matters
- Contribute to the team: Attend meetings, share technical input, and support professional development
- Provide cover: Deputise for the Head of Building Control when needed
About You
- Registered: Registered Building Inspector with a minimum of Class 2F
- Experienced: Strong background in Building Control plan checking
- Knowledgeable: Good knowledge of Approved Documents, the Building Regulations 2010, and the Building Act 1984
- Professionally qualified: Full member of RICS, CIOB, or CABE, or working towards membership
- IT confident: Comfortable using MS Office, Outlook, spreadsheets, databases, document systems, and dataspace
- Strong communicator: Approachable and able to work well with clients and colleagues
- Organised: Able to manage several projects and deadlines at the same time
Desirable:
- Commercial experience: Competent in commercial plan checking
- Wider technical knowledge: Knowledge of the RICS Plan of Work, design and construction stages, BS 9991, and BS 9999
