Description

NHBC is hiring a Building Inspector to cover the Cirencester / Swindon area.

This is a full-time, permanent role. It is field based, with home as your base. The salary is £45,000 to £48,000, depending on experience. The role also offers a 6% performance bonus.

As a Building Inspector, you will work with registered builders. You will help make sure new homes meet NHBC Standards, Building Regulations and other relevant law.

You will visit sites through the build process. You will check work, spot risks and help prevent defects before they become bigger problems. An impressive idea, really. Fixing things before they go wrong. Humans should try it more often.

You will manage your own diary and have support from your line manager and wider team. Your working day starts when you leave home, not when you arrive at your first site. You will not be asked to work weekends.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect new homes: Visit construction sites and inspect work during the build process.
  • Check standards: Help ensure homes meet NHBC Standards and Building Regulations.
  • Work with builders: Build strong links with registered builders and site managers.
  • Prevent defects: Identify risks and help stop construction issues early.
  • Support quality: Help improve standards across house building sites.
  • Manage risk: Support NHBC in managing insurance risk.
  • Plan your diary: Manage your own site visits and workload.
  • Give clear advice: Share practical guidance with builders and site teams.
  • Review information: Gather and assess details to support sound decisions.
  • Stay current: Keep up to date with industry changes, building standards and new practice.
  • Support customers: Deliver a quality service to agreed standards.

About You

You will need strong house-building or construction experience.

You should understand the build process and how different trades work together. You will also need to be confident on site and able to build trust with site managers.

This is a physical role. You will visit construction sites and inspect buildings at different stages. The work may involve working at height.

You will need:

  • Construction experience: Significant and relevant house-building or construction experience.
  • Site knowledge: A clear understanding of how homes are built.
  • Trade awareness: Ability to explain how trades interact during the build.
  • Communication skills: Ability to listen, build rapport and establish trust.
  • Influencing skills: Confidence to deal with disagreements in a fair and firm way.
  • Decision-making: Ability to gather and assess information.
  • Customer focus: A strong focus on quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Learning mindset: Interest in keeping up with standards and industry change.
  • Driving licence: A full driving licence is required.

It would also be helpful if you have, or are working towards, a construction qualification such as:

  • City and Guilds
  • HNC
  • HND
  • NVQ
  • Equivalent construction qualification

NHBC also supports technical staff who need to register with the Building Safety Regulator as a Registered Building Inspector. This includes training, development and funded assessment schemes.

What NHBC Offers

NHBC offers full training and ongoing support. You will also have scope to grow your career and gain recognised qualifications.

Benefits include:

  • Salary: £45,000 to £48,000, depending on experience.
  • Bonus: 6% performance bonus.
  • Annual leave: 27 days, plus bank holidays.
  • Holiday purchase: Option to buy extra leave.
  • Pension: Enhanced pension scheme, up to 10.5%.
  • Life assurance: Included as part of the benefits package.
  • Medical cover: Subsidised private medical insurance.
  • Discounts: Access to an employee discounts platform.
  • Volunteer leave: Two days of volunteer leave.
  • Family leave: Enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption leave and pay.
  • Work-life balance: No weekend working.
  • Home-based start: Your working day starts when you leave home.
  • Training: Full training and ongoing development.
  • Professional growth: Support for qualifications and memberships.
  • BSR support: Funding for relevant assessment schemes and Building Safety Regulator registration.

NHBC is a market leader in new home warranties and insurance. Its purpose is to raise house-building standards and protect homeowners.

NHBC also supports flexible working where possible. It has an inclusive culture and is a Disability Confident organisation.

How to Apply

Apply through the NHBC careers process.

Make sure your application shows your house-building or construction experience. You should also include examples of site inspection work, quality checks, customer service and how you have helped solve construction issues.

If you need support or reasonable adjustments during recruitment, NHBC can provide help where needed.

Application Tips

Show clear examples from your site or house-building experience. Explain how you have spotted defects, worked with site managers and helped improve build quality. Make your driving licence easy to find. Also include any construction qualifications or training, because making recruiters hunt for key facts is a bold strategy, and not usually a clever one.
