Description
Bexley Council is looking for two registered Building Inspector professionals to join its Building Control team.
This is a strong opportunity for someone with building control experience who wants to grow their career in a forward-thinking local authority.
You will help deliver statutory Building Control functions and support building regulations work across the borough. You will also work with internal teams, external partners and customers to help make sure building work is safe and compliant.
So yes, you will be helping stop the built environment from becoming a choose-your-own-adventure hazard. Somehow, society still needs that.
About Bexley Council
Bexley is an outer London borough between London and Kent.
The borough has strong transport links, including the Elizabeth Line and access to the M25. It also has parks, open spaces, heritage sites, libraries, leisure centres, shopping areas and schools.
Bexley Council is investing in its Building Control service. This includes staff development, improved processes and strong professional standards.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Building Inspector, you will support statutory building control work across Bexley.
You will:
- Inspect building work: Carry out site inspections in line with your competence.
- Check compliance: Help make sure works meet building regulations.
- Review applications: Support building regulations applications across the borough.
- Carry out restricted functions: Undertake restricted functions and activities where your registration allows.
- Work safely within scope: Receive supervision for work outside your current competence.
- Support customers: Provide clear advice and strong customer service.
- Work with partners: Build good links with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Support improvement: Contribute to better processes and higher professional standards.
- Develop your skills: Build your competence through supervision and professional development.
- Keep records: Maintain clear and accurate inspection and case records.
- Support service goals: Help deliver the council’s building control service plan.
Building Inspector Responsibilities
This Building Inspector role sits within a service that has adapted to major change in the sector.
The Building Safety Act and post-Grenfell reforms have changed the way building control work is managed. Bexley has responded with a service improvement plan, investment in staff and the successful registration of its inspectors.
You will join a team that supports safe development while also helping customers understand what is needed. A rare blend of technical rigour and politely explaining rules people definitely should have read.
About You
You will have building control experience and a clear interest in developing your career.
Bexley is especially interested in applicants who have achieved Class 2 competency, ideally at least categories A to D.
You will bring:
- Building control experience: Experience working in building control or a closely related field.
- RBI registration: Registered Building Inspector status, matched to your competence level.
- Technical knowledge: Understanding of building regulations and inspection practice.
- Customer focus: The ability to provide clear, helpful and professional advice.
- Team working: Confidence working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Partner skills: The ability to work with internal and external stakeholders.
- Good judgement: The ability to work within your competence and seek supervision when needed.
- Attention to detail: Strong record keeping and case management skills.
- Development focus: A commitment to ongoing professional growth.
- Communication skills: The ability to explain technical points clearly.
