This is a full-time, hybrid role within SOCOTEC Building Control. You will be expected to work in the office at least 3 days per week.
You will lead the local office team and support the wider Building Control service. You will provide technical and commercial support to Building Inspectors. You will also help the Regional Director manage and grow the team.
The role includes site inspections, compliance work, team leadership, client support and office performance. So yes, this is not just “manage the inbox and smile at a dashboard”. You will need technical judgement, people skills and commercial sense. Cruel, but fair.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Building Control locally: Support and manage the local Building Control office area.
- Support inspectors: Provide technical and commercial support to Building Inspectors.
- Inspect sites: Carry out inspections at different stages of construction.
- Check compliance: Review work against Building Regulations and related legislation.
- Review designs: Assess structural, architectural and mechanical designs.
- Check fire strategies: Review fire strategies against relevant standards.
- Advise clients: Provide Building Regulations consultancy advice where SOCOTEC is not acting as the Registered Building Control Approver.
- Act as an RBI: Carry out Registered Building Inspector duties within your competence and registration class.
- Supervise others: Support lower-class RBIs and graduate trainees.
- Apply regulations: Interpret and enforce national and local Building Regulations.
- Issue notices: Prepare formal notices and reports for breaches under the Building Safety Act 2022.
- Oversee work allocation: Make sure work is shared fairly across the team.
- Monitor quality: Check compliance with SOCOTEC processes and quality assurance systems.
- Handle escalation: Act as the first point of escalation for team concerns.
- Support growth: Help with enquiries, fee quotes and new opportunities.
- Manage performance: Support office profit and loss, budgets, resourcing and income targets.
- Prepare documents: Produce inspection reports and compliance documents.
- Lead people: Hold performance reviews and regular one-to-one meetings.
- Handle complaints: Act as the first line of response for formal complaints.
About You
SOCOTEC is looking for someone with:
- Building Control experience: Strong experience in Building Control or a related technical role.
- RBI registration: Ideally registered as a Registered Building Inspector.
- Professional membership: Membership of RICS, CABE or an equivalent body, or suitable experience.
- Leadership skills: Ability to lead, support and mentor team members.
- Junior staff support: Experience helping junior staff develop.
- Technical knowledge: Strong knowledge of Building Regulations and relevant legislation.
- Commercial awareness: Ability to understand budgets, income targets and operational performance.
- Client care: Strong relationship-building and client service skills.
- Communication skills: Ability to promote open and clear communication.
- Problem-solving: Ability to assess complex issues and find practical solutions.
- Independent working: Confidence working on your own.
- Team working: Ability to work as part of larger project teams.
