Description
Islington Council is recruiting a Registered Building Inspector (Class 2A) to join our Building Control team. You will help make sure new buildings and changes to existing buildings are safe, compliant, and well built.
This is a practical role with variety. You will work with residents, builders, designers, and other teams across the council. Your work supports safer homes, better public buildings, and a fairer borough.
You will report to the Team Manager, Building Control.
What you will do as a Registered Building Inspector
- Inspect: Carry out site inspections and checks across a wide range of building work.
- Assess: Review plans and technical details to support Building Regulations compliance.
- Advise: Give clear, timely advice to applicants, designers, and site teams.
- Record: Keep accurate case files and update systems to support audit and reporting.
- Support standards: Promote good practice in safety, accessibility, and sustainability.
- Work as part of a team: Share knowledge, support colleagues, and help improve the service.
- Mentor (if suitable): Support or guide others where you have the experience to do so.
What we are looking for in a Registered Building Inspector (essential)
- Qualification: Level 4 qualification in Building Control, or working towards a relevant degree (Building Surveying, Construction, Structural Engineering), or equivalent experience.
- Registration: Registered Building Inspector status with the Building Safety Regulator (Class 2A–2C).
- Membership: Member of a relevant professional body (RICS, CABE, CIOB, or similar), with a commitment to CPD.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of construction, Building Regulations, and good practice.
- Communication: Able to explain technical matters clearly and build good working relationships.
- IT skills: Confident using systems and keeping accurate records.
Desirable
- Experience supervising, coaching, or mentoring others.
