Description

NHBC is looking for a Building Inspector to join its inspection service team.

This is a full-time, permanent role. You will be field based in Trowbridge and work from home when not visiting sites.

The salary is £45,000 - £48,000, depending on experience. The role also includes a 6% performance bonus.

You will work with registered builders to make sure new homes meet NHBC Standards, Building Regulations and other relevant legal requirements.

You will build strong working relationships with site managers in your area. You will help them find and prevent construction defects before they become bigger problems. Revolutionary, apparently, because spotting issues early still feels like a rare act of civilisation.

This is a practical site-based role. You will be out visiting construction sites most days. Your working day starts when you leave home, not when you arrive at your first site.

NHBC will provide full training and ongoing support from your line manager and wider team. You will also manage your own diary and have autonomy in how you plan your work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect new homes: Visit construction sites and inspect work through the build process.
  • Check standards: Make sure homes meet NHBC Standards and Building Regulations.
  • Support builders: Work with registered builders and site managers.
  • Prevent defects: Help identify and prevent construction defects.
  • Manage risk: Support NHBC in managing insurance risk.
  • Build relationships: Develop strong links with site teams on your patch.
  • Give guidance: Help builders understand what is needed to meet standards.
  • Record findings: Keep clear records of inspections and issues.
  • Support quality: Help improve the quality of homes for new buyers.
  • Plan your diary: Manage your own workload and site visits.
  • Work safely: Visit active construction sites and inspect buildings at different stages.
  • Work at height: Carry out inspections that may involve working at height.

About You

NHBC is looking for someone with:

  • Construction experience: Significant and relevant house-building or construction experience.
  • Building knowledge: Strong understanding of the house-building process.
  • Trade awareness: Ability to explain how trades interact during construction.
  • Relationship skills: Ability to listen, build rapport and gain trust.
  • Influencing skills: Confidence dealing with disagreements in a firm but professional way.
  • Decision-making skills: Ability to gather and assess information before making decisions.
  • Customer focus: Commitment to quality service and customer satisfaction.
  • Site readiness: Ability to work on construction sites in a physically demanding role.
  • Learning mindset: Interest in keeping up to date with building standards and industry changes.
  • Driving licence: A full driving licence is required.
  • Qualification: A construction qualification such as City and Guilds, HNC, HND or NVQ would be useful.

This role is subject to a DVLA driving licence check as part of pre-employment screening.

  • Funding: NHBC will pay for the assessment schemes.
  • Registration support: NHBC will also fund registration with the Building Safety Regulator.
