Description

SOCOTEC is looking for a Building Inspector to join its Building Control team in Birmingham.

This is a full-time role based at Somerset House, Suite 103, 37 Temple Street, Birmingham.

You will inspect construction sites at different stages. You will check that work meets Building Regulations and related legislation. You will also advise architects, builders and developers on regulatory requirements.

This role is part of SOCOTEC’s Building and Real Estate division. The team supports clients across the property lifecycle, including building surveying, project management, compliance, technical due diligence and sustainability consultancy.

You will play a key role in public safety, good building standards and safer construction. So yes, this is actual inspection work, not just nodding at drawings and hoping gravity behaves itself.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess compliance: Check work against Building Regulations and related legislation.
  • Review designs: Assess structural, architectural and mechanical designs.
  • Check materials: Review building materials and construction specifications.
  • Review fire strategies: Assess fire strategies against relevant standards.
  • Work within registration: Act as a Registered Building Inspector within your class and competence.
  • Support others: Supervise lower-class RBIs and graduate trainees where needed.
  • Apply regulations: Interpret and apply national and local building rules.
  • Support safety: Help ensure fire safety, access, energy efficiency and environmental requirements are met.
  • Use enforcement powers: Issue formal notices for compliance breaches under the Building Safety Act 2022 where required.
  • Prepare reports: Produce clear inspection reports and compliance records.
  • Support approvals: Prepare compliance certificates and regulatory approval documents.
  • Maintain records: Keep accurate records with clear audit trails.
  • Advise clients: Provide Building Regulations advice where SOCOTEC is not acting as the Registered Building Control Approver.
  • Work with project teams: Liaise with clients, architects, builders and developers.

About You

  • RBI registration: Registration as a Registered Building Inspector at the right level, ideally 3G or 3H.

  • Building control knowledge: Strong understanding of Building Regulations and related legislation.
  • Technical skill: Ability to assess complex technical issues and find practical solutions.
  • Inspection experience: Confidence inspecting construction work on site.
  • Design knowledge: Ability to review drawings, specifications and building designs.
  • Fire safety awareness: Understanding of fire safety requirements in building control work.
  • Client skills: Strong relationship-building and client care skills.
  • Communication skills: Ability to explain technical issues clearly.
  • Independent working: Confidence working on your own.
  • Team working: Ability to work as part of larger project teams.
  • Problem-solving: Ability to analyse issues and apply suitable solutions.
  • CPD commitment: Willingness to keep skills up to date through continued professional development.
  • Regulatory awareness: Ability to stay informed about changes to codes, regulations and best practice.
