Description

Ridge is looking for a Senior Building Safety Consultant to join its Birmingham team.

This is a permanent, full-time role. You will work on complex projects across sectors such as residential, commercial, healthcare, education and data centres.

Ridge is growing its Building Safety and Building Regulations capability in response to the Building Safety Act and wider regulatory change.

You will act as a trusted technical adviser. You will help clients and design teams deliver safe, clear and compliant design solutions.

This is an advisory and design-led role. It is not a Building Control or regulatory approval role. So, mercifully, everyone can stop pretending the same job title means the same thing everywhere.

The role covers the project lifecycle, with a strong focus on RIBA Stages 4 to 6. You will work closely with design teams to embed Building Regulations compliance into coordinated design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise on Building Safety: Support clients and teams on Building Safety Act duties.
  • Support Building Regulations: Give practical advice on Building Regulations compliance.
  • Support BRPD work: Help deliver the Building Regulations Principal Designer role.
  • Review designs: Check and challenge design proposals in a constructive way.
  • Resolve issues: Work with architectural, fire, structural and MEP teams.
  • Support gateway work: Help prepare gateway processes and regulatory submissions.
  • Coordinate technical input: Support design teams from RIBA Stage 4 onwards.
  • Manage compliance: Help make compliance part of live project delivery.
  • Use sound judgement: Apply practical and proportionate advice to complex projects.
  • Support project teams: Help teams avoid risk without turning compliance into a box-ticking exercise.

About You

Ridge is looking for someone with:

  • Technical design experience: Strong experience in detailed design development.
  • Coordination skills: Experience leading technical coordination across project teams.
  • Building Regulations knowledge: Practical knowledge of the Building Regulations.
  • Building Safety awareness: An understanding of how the Building Safety Act affects projects.
  • Client confidence: Ability to work well with clients and design teams.
  • Project management skills: Ability to manage more than one project at a time.
  • Good judgement: Confidence making clear and balanced technical decisions.
  • Design-led background: Experience as an Architectural Technologist, Design Manager or technical design lead would suit this role.
  • RIBA Stage 4 experience: Confidence working at RIBA Stage 4 and beyond.
  • Useful added experience: Higher-risk building experience or BRPD delivery would be helpful, but is not essential.

What Ridge Offers

Ridge offers:

  • Senior technical role: Real responsibility and influence across complex projects.
  • Career pathway: Clear routes into more senior technical or Associate-level roles.
  • Technical focus: A role that also suits people who want to stay close to delivery.
  • Multidisciplinary working: A collaborative team across the built environment.
  • Experienced support: Guidance from experienced colleagues.
  • Clear governance: Supportive systems to help manage risk.
  • Quality-led culture: A focus on good judgement and getting compliance right.
  • Annual leave: 25 days’ annual leave, with options to buy, carry over or sell leave.
  • Volunteering: Three volunteering days each year.
  • Mental health support: Mental Health First Aiders and access to Unum’s Help@hand app.
  • Financial benefits: Life assurance, pension scheme and income protection.
  • Health benefits: Medical insurance, private GP access and discounted gym membership.
  • Flexible working: Hybrid working to support you, your family and your team.
  • Career development: Support for professional, personal and educational goals.
  • Extra benefits: Performance bonus, car allowance and more, depending on role and progression.
