Description

Coventry City Council is looking for a Senior Building Control Officer to join its Building Control team.

This is a full-time, permanent role. The role is 37 hours per week and is based at One Friargate, Coventry.

Coventry City Council is open to flexible working. Applications from people who want to work part-time or in another flexible way will be considered.

The Building Control team works on a wide range of projects. These include home extensions, conversions, large commercial schemes and public developments.

In this role, you will carry out plan checks and site inspections. You will assess work against Building Regulations, linked legislation, government guidance and council policies.

You will also help protect public safety. This includes responding to reports of dangerous or dilapidated structures and making sure action is taken where needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess plans: Review building control applications and check them against legal requirements.
  • Carry out inspections: Visit sites across Coventry to inspect building work.
  • Check compliance: Assess work against Building Regulations and related legislation.
  • Issue decisions: Record information clearly and issue decisions on time.
  • Support public safety: Respond to dangerous and dilapidated structure reports.
  • Take action on risk: Help make sure any danger to the public is removed.
  • Advise clients: Liaise with clients, agents, builders and other stakeholders.
  • Give technical advice: Act as a technical advisor on Building Control matters.
  • Support legal compliance: Work in line with the Building Acts, Building Regulations and related law.
  • Improve services: Help develop the Building Control service.
  • Use best practice: Support new ideas and better ways of working.
  • Promote safer buildings: Support safety, quality, access, energy efficiency and fire safety.
  • Work with partners: Liaise with other council teams and external agencies.

About You

Coventry City Council is looking for an experienced Building Control professional with Class 2 RBI accreditation.

You should have one or more of the following:

  • Building qualification: ONC, OND or BTEC in a building-related subject.
  • Professional qualification: Qualification from RICS, ABE or CIOB, with a Building Control focus.
  • Building Control diploma: CIOB Public Service Building Control Surveying Diploma at Level 4, 5 or 6.
  • Relevant experience: At least three years’ experience working in a Building Regulations environment.

You must also have:

  • RBI status: Validation as a Building Safety Regulator Class 2 A-F Domestic Registered Building Inspector.
  • Communication skills: Strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • People skills: The ability to work well with residents, clients, colleagues and partners.
  • Workload management: The ability to work under pressure and manage priorities.
  • Technical judgement: The ability to assess risk and make sound decisions.
  • Driving licence: A valid driving licence and access to a vehicle.
  • Right to work: The right to work in the UK.
