Description

Newham Council is looking for an interim Building Safety Manager to support fire safety and building safety work across its housing stock.

This is a full-time interim role paying £500 per day. The role is hybrid, with 2 days per week in the office in Stratford.

You will work within the Building and Fire Safety Team. You will help deliver fire safety improvement works and support compliance with the Building Safety Act 2022.

You will gather and review technical building information for Building Safety Case Reports. You will also help manage actions from fire risk assessments, FRAEWs and other building safety checks.

This is a practical role with a strong focus on residents, records, site work and compliance. So yes, actual useful work, not just colouring in risk trackers until everyone quietly loses hope.

You will work with internal teams, fire engineers, consultants and contractors. You will also support structural and fire safety matters for in-scope buildings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Building Safety compliance: Help the council meet duties under the Building Safety Act 2022.
  • Gather building information: Review plans, records and technical data to assess risk.
  • Support safety cases: Help prepare information for Building Safety Case Reports.
  • Manage fire safety actions: Track and support actions from FRAs, FRAEWs and audits.
  • Quality check surveys: Review survey work and liaise with specialist consultants.
  • Support improvement works: Attend project meetings with fire safety contractors.
  • Work with partners: Liaise with consultants, contractors, fire engineers and internal teams.
  • Maintain records: Keep clear records for inspections, compliance and resident updates.
  • Support safety controls: Help apply Safety Management System controls for building safety works.
  • Engage residents: Support resident engagement in high-risk buildings.
  • Respond to queries: Help answer resident questions about fire safety works and assessments.
  • Arrange access: Coordinate access for inspections, surveys and equipment testing.
  • Support procedures: Help develop and apply fire safety processes and procedures.
  • Keep up to date: Stay informed on fire safety law, guidance, codes and best practice.

About You

  • Building Safety knowledge: Knowledge of the Building Safety Act 2022 and its key principles.

  • Relevant qualifications: GCSE English or equivalent.
  • Level 3 qualification: A minimum Level 3 qualification.
  • Building safety training: CIOB Level 6 Building Safety Management or equivalent.
  • Risk knowledge: NEBOSH Risk Assessment or equivalent.
  • Building Safety experience: At least 2 years’ experience in building safety management.
  • Compliance background: Experience or knowledge of compliance work.
  • Safety case awareness: Experience writing safety cases, or a clear understanding of what is involved.
  • Good communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Resident communication skills: Ability to write newsletters and resident updates.
  • IT skills: Good use of Microsoft Word, Excel and email.
  • Organisation: Ability to plan, prioritise and manage workload and projects.
  • Attention to detail: Accuracy when handling records, documents and actions.
  • Partnership working: Ability to build strong links with consultants and contractors.
  • Problem solving: Ability to take ownership and see issues through to resolution.
