Description
Southampton City Council is hiring an Assistant Building Control Surveyor. This is a permanent, full-time role. You will work 37 hours per week. The role is based at the Civic Centre, Southampton, SO14 7LY, with flexible working from home and the office.
This is a career graded post. There is progression to Grade 8, with a salary of £37,280 to £40,778, after successful registration with the Building Safety Regulator as a Class 2A Building Inspector.
You will join the building control team. You will inspect work on construction projects and check plans against building regulations.
You will also inspect dangerous structures and buildings being demolished. So yes, a bit more exciting than “reviewing stakeholder alignment”, the phrase humanity invented to make meetings sound heroic.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect construction work: Visit sites and check building work at different stages.
- Check plans: Review plans for compliance with building regulation requirements.
- Support building control: Work with the wider building control team.
- Inspect dangerous structures: Support inspections of unsafe buildings and structures.
- Inspect demolition works: Check buildings that are being demolished.
- Use technical knowledge: Apply your knowledge of building construction.
- Communicate clearly: Work with applicants, colleagues and other contacts.
- Work flexibly: Split your time between home, site and the Civic Centre.
- Develop your skills: Complete relevant training and competency testing.
- Work towards registration: Aim for BSR registration as a Class 2A Building Inspector.
About You
This role may suit someone with a construction or architectural background. It may also suit someone who wants to build a career in building control.
You should have good knowledge of building construction. You will also need strong communication skills and a flexible approach.
