Description

BCP Council is hiring two permanent Building Control Surveyor II roles.

This is a full-time role based across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. The starting salary is £44,075.

This role is ideal for a skilled Surveyor with strong building control experience. You will inspect and assess building work. You will check that projects meet building regulations and legal standards.

You will work on more complex projects. You will give specialist advice and make sound technical decisions with less day-to-day guidance.

This is a chance to join a large council that serves around 400,000 residents. BCP Council employs more than 5,000 people and supports a wide range of local services. Public service: somehow both vital and full of forms. Humanity does love paperwork with consequences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess applications: Review complex plans, drawings and specifications against building regulations.
  • Inspect building work: Visit sites during construction and at completion.
  • Give technical advice: Advise on design, safety, access and compliance issues.
  • Support early project advice: Provide input at pre-application stage to help reduce delays.
  • Resolve compliance issues: Give clear advice where work does not meet required standards.
  • Issue approvals: Produce reports, grant approvals and issue completion certificates.
  • Handle enforcement: Investigate unauthorised or non-compliant building works.
  • Check materials: Sample and test construction materials where needed.
  • Assess dangerous structures: Survey unsafe buildings and help remove risks to the public.
  • Keep records: Maintain accurate and auditable inspection records.
  • Calculate fees: Work out fees in line with agreed rates.
  • Build relationships: Support customers and help promote the building control service.

About You

You will need strong technical knowledge and good judgement. You should be confident working with building regulations, construction plans and site inspections.

You should also be able to explain complex issues in a clear way. This matters because not everyone dreams in regulation clauses, mercifully.

You will need:

  • Registration: Minimum Class 2D Registered Building Inspector status.
  • Qualification: A degree in a construction-related subject, or equivalent experience.
  • Membership: Membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors or the Association of Building Engineers.
  • Experience: Significant experience in the construction industry.
  • Building control knowledge: Experience of building control and enforcement work.
  • Regulation knowledge: Detailed knowledge of building regulations and construction law.
  • Technical knowledge: Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, products and systems.
  • Workload management: Ability to plan and manage your own caseload.
  • Communication skills: Ability to influence, persuade and explain technical points clearly.

Please note that this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must already have the right to work in the UK.

What BCP Council Offers

BCP Council offers a clear pay band for this role. All new starters begin at the entry point of the band. This supports fairness and consistency across the organisation.

Benefits include:

  • Permanent role: Long-term career opportunity with BCP Council.
  • Clear progression: A defined pay band as your career develops.
  • Large employer: Join a council with more than 5,000 staff.
  • Meaningful work: Help support safe and compliant buildings across BCP.
  • Inclusive workplace: BCP Council is a Disability Confident Employer.
  • Support with adjustments: Reasonable adjustments are available during recruitment.
  • Enhanced benefits: Access to BCP Council’s Pay and Reward package.

How to Apply

Apply through the BCP Council careers site.

The closing date is 17 May 2026.

When applying, make sure your CV or application clearly shows your building control experience, inspector registration, technical knowledge and work on complex projects.

You should also explain your experience of inspections, enforcement, building regulations and customer advice.

Application Tips

Use clear examples from your building control or Surveyor experience. Show how you have assessed plans, inspected work, dealt with non-compliance and advised customers. Make your Class 2D Registered Building Inspector status easy to find. Also show how you manage a caseload and explain technical issues in plain English, because hiring panels are humans, sadly, and they do like clarity.
