Places for People is hiring a Building Surveyor for the East Midlands.

This is a permanent role based in Derby, covering the East Midlands region. You will need to live in the East Midlands for this role.

You will support the surveying team across a wide range of work. This includes stock condition surveys, damp and mould, disrepair, fire door inspections, energy efficiency, and other specialist assessments.

You will manage your own workload and help deliver surveys to the right standard and on time. You will also provide technical advice, support data accuracy, and help the wider business meet compliance, safety, and programme needs.

This role is a strong fit for an experienced Surveyor who can work independently, diagnose defects, and produce clear technical reports.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out surveys: Complete stock condition, damp and mould, disrepair, fire door, and other specialist surveys
  • Investigate defects: Deliver visual and intrusive defect investigations across different property types
  • Support disrepair work: Survey homes, prepare schedules of work, and help manage disrepair cases
  • Provide technical advice: Give advice on defects, early failures, and customer complaints
  • Capture accurate data: Record survey findings and help maintain good quality asset information
  • Support planning: Help plan survey programmes and meet KPIs and deadlines
  • Prepare reports: Write technical reports, specifications, and cost forecasts
  • Work with others: Support the wider business with compliance, safety, and investment planning
  • Oversee consultants: Monitor third-party consultants where needed
  • Share best practice: Help improve team performance and survey quality

About You

  • Experienced: Strong background in survey reports, survey planning, and high-volume defect investigations
  • Knowledgeable: Good understanding of Housing Disrepair Law
  • Technically strong: Able to diagnose defects, prepare schedules of work, and write clear technical reports
  • Analytical: Able to review stock data and support long-term investment planning
  • Organised: Comfortable managing deadlines, survey volumes, and performance reporting
  • Qualified or working towards it: Ideally holds a surveying or construction-related degree and is working towards or already holds RICS status
  • Customer focused: Strong interpersonal skills and able to work well with others
  • Safety aware: Good understanding of health and safety duties and risk management
  • Digitally confident: Comfortable using Microsoft tools, asset registers, and digital data systems
  • Mobile: Full valid driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle
  • Experienced in the sector: At least 5 years of surveying or related construction experience
